4 Reasons You Should Start a Journal Habit (Life Lessons From 7 Years of Daily Journaling)

I recently past 7 years of daily journaling.

It’s June 2026 as I write this. The first entry I wrote was on April 8th 2019, and I haven’t missed a day since. Journaling has been one of my foundational habits. It’s grounded me. Held me accountable. And given me a powerful sense of self-awareness.

But that’s only scratching the surface…

In this article, I’m going to share why you should begin journaling every day, the ways it can change your life, and how you can get started today. So, if that’s if interest to you, keep reading.

4 Ways Journaling Will Improve Your Life

After 7 years of journaling, I’ve learned a few learned a ton of things about myself.

I’ve documented key life lessons, painful experiences, and beautiful moments that now live in thousands pages in over a dozen notebooks. And while there are many ways 7 years of daily journaling has improved my life…

Here are the 4 that stood out to me the most.

1. Strengthens Your Ability to Express Yourself

express yourself

Journaling is an intimate practice.

You’re jotting your most honest, rawest, and unfiltered thoughts. The real you surfaces. With that being the case, journaling is a practice of authenticity. You’re not worrying about the opinions or judgements of others.

You’re just being YOU.

Every journal entry is a stream of consciousness flowing from your mind, to your pen, and onto the page. And the interesting thing about this form of expression is that the more you do it, the better you get at it in real life.

Here’s what I noticed after 7 years of daily journaling.

My thoughts became clearer. My speech became more fluid. And my ability to speak my truth grew stronger with every journal entry I wrote.

2. Builds Your Self-Awareness

Here’s something about journaling you don’t learn until you do it—unless you’re reading a blog like this ;)

It’s the wildest thing to go back to old entries from 2, 3, 5 years ago… and peer into your old patterns of thinking. You can LITERALLY see the mentality that was holding you back, causing chaos in your life, or keeping you at odds with certain people.

As you grow older, naturally, your thinking matures.

As a result, you can look at old journal entries, and pinpoint where you were unintentionally sabotaging your own success. The words you wrote, the attitude you had, the actions you took, etc.

You can see everything from a more mature lens and put things in their proper perspective.

I don’t know anything else that will give you that kind of self-awareness.

3. Acts as a Time Capsule

Imagine you had a real time capsule.

A device that allowed you to relive the moments that made you grateful, remember the lessons that made you stronger, revisit the experiences that transformed you… Journaling is the time capsule that allows you to do that.

After 7 years of daily journaling, I find it assuming to return to my past.

I get to see who I was, where I’ve been, the silly things I used to value, as well as the things that still matters to me today. And all of these either reinforce or undermine certain aspects about my present circumstance.

4. Allows You to Vent Your Emotions

Stressful day at work? Jerk cut you off in traffic? Life getting you down in general?

Journal about it. Every day. The pressures of life will weigh all of us down from time to time. It’s inescapable. But how you deal with it will determine how much of that pressure affects the quality of your life.

By journaling about your stresses, fears, self-doubts, challenges, etc., you release that pressure release valve.

Most people stew in their emotional build up of disappointment, frustration, failure until they burst. They then go home and scream at their spouse, kick their dog, or berate their kids.

Not cool.

One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned after 7 years of daily journaling is that venting in private is the best strategy to being kind in public. We all have to deal with stress and pressure.

But journaling allows you to do it in a healthy way.

Final Thoughts

Journaling is more than just writing in a notebook.

It’s the deliberate practice of self-expression, honest communication, and self-awareness development all wrapped into a single act. While it’s simple in practice, the results are disproportionately in application.

And that’s why YOU should start a daily journaling practice too. And remember, stay Motivated And Disciplined.
