It’s 9:06 am as I write this. It’s Saturday, Dec 27. I’m currently 36,000 ft in the air flying to Kelowna, BC from Alberta. I’m looking out the window to my right. The plane just crested above the massive snowstorm engulfing the prairies. Sunlight is flooding into the aircraft. This is not a trip, it’s not a vacation. It’s the beginning of the biggest life change I’ve ever undertaken. Let me explain.
Creating By Design
For the last 2 and a half years, I ran my own business as a freelance copywriter. However A few months ago, I decided to get a job. I wanted to be immersed in an environment where I could continue growing and advancing my career. I took a sheet of paper and wrote down the exact details of my dream job:
- The environment
- The culture
- The people
- The salary etc
Then I took that paper and taped it to my wall, where I read it to myself every day. Once in the morning, after waking up. And once at night before going to sleep. Shortly after, an ad appeared on Indeed. And get this… it literally was EVERYTHING I wrote down on that sheet of paper just 6 weeks prior.
Going For Gold
I couldn’t believe it. But if I’m being honest… I didn’t really think much of it. Why? It was such a desirable position, I thought there’d be hundreds, maybe thousands of applicants. What were my chances of standing out in all that competition? But I thought f*ck it. Just go for it. Failure is fine, but not trying is unacceptable.
So I filled out the application and sent it off, not thinking I’d even get a response. But to my surprise, about a week later, someone from the team got back to me: “Alex, thank you for applying. We’d like to move forward with your application.”
Knocking Out The Competition
There was a series of test writing projects, interviews, and even a psychological examination that came afterward. The entire application process took about a month. And then… I got a call from Sam, the Creative Director, offering me the copywriter position. It was wild. During the call, he said something to me that really got my attention…
“Alex, we had a large talent pool to choose from, and you were the one who stuck out.” I later learned that every time my company puts out an ad for a new position, they are deluged with at least 1200 applicants that they need to sort through and qualify.
Imagine that… Out of 1200 applicants, I was the one who stood out the most. I don’t say that to brag (remember, I didn’t even think I would get the job when I applied for it). I say it to encourage you. You never really know what will happen until you GO for it.
Leaping Into The Biggest Life Change (So Far)
Now here’s the thing… This job required me to move to Kelowna, as it is an in-house position. Other than the time I gave up everything to fly out to Asia and train martial arts, this is by far the biggest life change I’ve ever made (so far). The result? I started writing this blog post at 36,000 ft in the air, flying to Kelowna from Alberta.
But right now? I’m in my new apartment in Kelowna, sitting on my new bed (fresh from JYSK) that I put together last night. And I’m so excited to begin this new chapter in my life. I want to learn, grow, develop, and become more. I want to push myself and strengthen every aspect of my character and personality.
In short, I want to continue living by the philosophy that I’ve consistently advocated in this personal blog since I started writing in it back in 2022. To just try to get a little better each and every day.
Final Thoughts
This is my biggest life change. I’m excited about the opportunity. Excited about the growth. Excited about the experiences that I’m going to have. The day I landed in Kelowna and walked through the door of my new apartment, I knew this was going to be an adventure. One that I was going to remember for the rest of my life.
As a result, I’m open to the world, to people, and to life. I want to soak up every experience and learn as much as I can during my time here. And who knows… Maybe I’ll even stay… While it wasn’t in the original plans, I won’t rule it out.
