Why You Must Develop Your Natural Gifts And Talents

You have a set of natural gifts and talents. We all do. God has planted seeds of genius within you so that they will eventually sprout and bear fruit of contentment and abundance in your life. But there’s a caveat. Your innate skills don’t develop on their own—they require your participation. You have to put in the time to become great at what you do.

In this article, I’m going to reveal the special reasons why you must develop your natural gifts and talents. Also, I’ll show you the simple process I went through to develop mine so that you have a proven roadmap to follow. Keep reading to learn more.

Why Developing Your Gifts And Talents Is Crucial

There are things we need to survive: eat, sleep, drink, etc. But becoming all you can be requires developing your natural skills. For this reason, leaning into those innate abilities is non-negotiable if you want to become all that you’re capable of being.

And I’m here to help inspire that process. Here are the top reasons you need to develop your gifts and talents.

1. Unexpected Opportunities

“A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men”

— Proverbs 18:16

My talent stack encompasses numerous skills.

However, it all started with one… Writing. As a kid, I used to write thousands and thousands of pages worth of stories about my favorite cartoon characters growing up (I even still have a couple of those books to this day, over 20 years later).

This foundational skill pulled me down a path I never could have imagined.

Throughout my writing career, I’ve written for multimillionaire CEOs, large organizations, as well as brands and businesses around the world, from the U.S. to the UK. 5 years ago, if you had told me this would be my reality, I would have said that you need a check-up from the neck up.

I couldn’t have possibly imagined I’d ever get these opportunities.

But because I put in the reps to develop and master my natural gifts and talents, unexpected doors opened up to me. And the same is true for you. You just have to put in the time, and you’ll be amazed at what can happen in a few years of consistent effort.

So, make a commitment today to begin developing those gifts you’ve been blessed with.

2. Connections And Community

“People who like the same things tend to like each other.”

— Corey Wayne

We all have a desire to belong, to feel a part of something bigger than ourselves.

I used to think that the idea of “community” was a cheesy concept. How wrong I was. The truth is that the need to be integrated within a group is a natural part of human nature. You and I and everybody else innately crave connection with one another.

And here’s how your gifts and talents satisfy this need…

Passion forms friendships, and friendships reinforce passion. The more you immerse yourself in the things you love, the more you’ll draw the right people (who share similar goals, values, and interests) into your life.

Your natural gifts and talents are what facilitate this process.

3. Satisfaction And Contentment

“True happiness is… to enjoy the present, without anxious dependence upon the future.”

— Epicurus

I have many gifts.

I’m a writer, a speaker, and a rapper. Any time I produce a great piece of work—whether it’s an article, a speech, or a song—I take great pride in it. It makes me feel content and satisfied. Why? Because I just poured myself into producing something beautiful.

Nothing beats that kind of gratification. It’s rich. Rewarding. And reassuring.

What is your craft that you can pour yourself into? Is it art? Drawing? Woodwork? Dance? Figure that out and let it guide your contentment and direction in life. I swear, it’s one of the most satisfying experiences.

Pick something and go.

How To Cultivate Your Natural Talents

I’m terrible at a lot of things.

In fact, I’m riddled with flaws and faults. But despite my shortcomings, there has been something I’ve always gotten right in my life. And that is the fact that I’ve always followed my intuition and curiosity.

In other words, I’ve always followed my passions.

It’s been an interesting ride that has given me experiences I never expected to have. And I want the same for you. And that’s why I’m going to give you 3 simple steps I’ve used to honor my gifts and talents, so that you can do the same with yours.

1. Practice The One-Hour Rule

“One hour a day, every day.” That was the rule I put on myself for practice time when I was developing my freestyle rap skills. In 2015, I decided I wanted to be the best at this craft. So, every day, for one hour, I would practice these skills. I was relentless. I would rap on buses, at work, walking down the sidewalk, you name it.

And after 2 years of this daily practice, I went from being a nobody to getting invited to perform at various venues (lounges, cafes, bars, nightclubs, weddings, birthday parties, etc.) almost on a weekly basis. The One-Hour Rule changed everything for me, and it can do the same for you.

2. Internalize The Everyday Mentality

I hired my first coach in 2011. And he said something that has remained with me more than 10 years later. It was simple, but profound. “It’s not what you do every now and then that makes a difference in your life. It’s what you do every single day on a consistent and regular basis.” Those were his exact words.

And I have taken them as gospel in my life. They haven’t steered me wrong. Any kind of success I’ve had has almost always been the result of me taking action toward an outcome every day. Sometimes for years. This concept has certainly applied to developing my gifts and talents.

3. Adopt A Long-Term Mindset

I recently landed my dream job as a copywriter for Dan Martell. I started my career as a content writer, working for a digital marketing agency here in Calgary. Copywriting had always felt like a behemoth to me. It’s so much more complex and involved than content writing. Not going to lie—I was intimidated to really try my hand at copywriting.

But finally, in May 2024, I committed to learning this skill. So I took on a daily practice to improve my copywriting. It was simple:

  • Read a piece of copy a day
  • Write a piece of copy a day
  • Come up with a big idea a day

This was the simple framework I started following on May 26, 2024.

And here I am, almost a year and a half later (it’s Nov 16, 2025, as I write this), and I have not missed a single day of this practice. Why? Because I see the long term. I know that meaningful results take time—years, even decades in some cases. So, I’ve adopted a long-term mindset. I recommend you do the same.

What’s Next? Develop A Plan To Master Your Craft

Whether you’re into building businesses, bookshelves, or model train sets, your gifts and talents are a part of you. Master them. They give you character and distinction. They separate you, make you unique, and keep you youthful. Commit to a certain amount of time that you can give to these skills each day.
