My 3 Best Tips To Build Mental Resilience
Think of these as behavior challenges to get you to build mental strength.
They are powerful strategies that can help you lock in on your goals and begin making meaningful progress toward them. As a result, you’ll improve your current situation, gain a clearer mindset, keep negative emotions in check, and begin to unravel a more authentic life. Sound good? I thought so!
Now, let’s unpack my 3 best tips for how to strengthen your mindset.
1. Practice Calculated Hardships

“Do something that sucks every day.”
— David Goggins
In 2020, I read “Can’t Hurt Me” by David Goggins for the first time.
The book details Goggins’ story and his “Come to Jesus” moments that took him from an insecure underachiever to one of the world’s most resilient and influential leaders. And in one of the chapters, Goggins touches on the necessity of deliberately doing hard things.
I refer to these as Calculated Hardships—here are a few examples to consider:
- Take a daily cold shower
- Use the stairs instead of an escalator
- Go for a daily walk around your block
- Wake up early every day
- No social media for a day or week or forever
The idea is to intentionally integrate difficulty into your daily life—on a regular basis.
Why? Because it’s human nature to seek comfort; however, this tendency can cause you to lose your sense of strength and resilience. And if you’re ever faced with a difficult time (which, let’s face it, will happen at some point), you’ll be ill-prepared.
That’s why manufacturing difficulty can be so advantageous.
2. Harness The Power Of Accountability

Accountability is the glue that ties commitment to the result.”
— Bob Proctor
Another self-help book that had a significant impact on me was “The Compound Effect” by Darren Hardy.
I read that book for the first time in 2019. And that’s when I first heard of the concept of an accountability partner. This relationship is where you enlist someone you trust to share your goals and ask them to keep you accountable to the actions and habits aligned with your objectives (and vice versa).
Here are some major benefits of having an accountability partner:
- A stronger and more positive mindset toward your goals
- Support system for navigating challenging situations
- Clear reduction in negative thinking and self-talk
- More consistency in overcoming your challenges with resilience
- Sense of camaraderie toward your biggest dreams
- Hold you toward committed actions and concentrated effort
- Different perspectives to change how you approach situations
An accountability partner can give you a massive boost of confidence.
I speak from experience when I say that the right person can motivate you to drive action in your life. But if you don’t believe me, then believe this study that revealed you have a 65% chance of achieving a goal by telling someone about it and a 95% chance if you have regular check-ins with that person.
If you want to know how to strengthen your mindset, this is the perfect place to start.
3. Bet On Yourself

“Take a chance! All life is a chance. The man who goes farthest is generally the one who is willing to do and dare.”
— Dale Carnegie
Sometimes you don’t know how strong you are until being strong is your only option.
While I usually advocate for small changes and gradual improvements over a prolonged period, there’s something to be said about just nuking everything and starting over. In short, diving into the deep end (even when you don’t feel ready) has its merits.
Here are a few examples of what that could look like:
- Moving to a new city (or country)
- Starting a business
- Asking a stranger out on a date
- Changing jobs or careers
There are many ways you can bet on yourself.
But here’s what you need to understand: The outcomes will not always be in your immediate favor. You will experience loneliness if you move to a new city. A new business venture will make you question your capabilities (and sanity). Asking someone out on a date will lead to rejection, etc.
However, if you can weather the storm, the results often turn out much better than you think. And you’ll have a stronger and more resilient mindset (and self-belief) as a direct result.
