Life is a long journey.
And with all the problems, challenges, and difficulties along the path, you better find some way to enjoy it. That’s why I’m a huge proponent of hobbies. More specifically, a lifelong pursuit. These are essential to keep you afloat in life.
In just a second, I’ll explain why, but first, you may be asking yourself…
What Is A Lifelong Life Pursuit?

Lifelong pursuits are hobbies, interests, and passions that—you guessed it—you engage in over your lifetime.
But there’s a caveat to this: I’m not talking about trying a bunch of different activities over the course of your life. I’m talking about having 2 (maybe 3) passions that set you on fire. And learning, studying, and mastering them throughout your months, years, decades, and eventually, your entire life cycle.
My Lifelong Pursuits

There are a couple of lifelong pursuits I can share with you from my life.
These practices keep me well-rounded and hopefully will give you some inspiration or ideas for your own life.
Martial Arts
If you’ve been following my blog for any length of time, you know I’m a huge proponent of martial arts.
As of the publishing of this post, I’ve been training for about 4 years. My combat sport of choice? Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I believe martial arts is one of the most potent pathways toward skyrocketing your self-confidence, self-discipline, and self-improvement.
For this reason, it stands as one of my lifelong pursuits.
Public Speaking
My next lifelong pursuit? Public speaking.
There was a time when I thought this was going to be my career path. And truth be told, even now, I’m not ruling it out as a future endeavor/business. However, I do it because I love getting up on stage and sharing personal stories and insights to help others.
That’s one of the reasons why I started this blog.
As a result, public speaking is another lifelong pursuit. I’m an active member of Toastmasters International (a worldwide organization that helps people develop their public speaking and communication skills), and I occasionally even give speeches at various conferences and special events.
I’ve learned a tremendous amount from my lifelong pursuit of public speaking, which has served me well in almost every other area of my life. Now, the question is, why should you do this? There are a bunch of reasons.
Let’s explore a few of them.
3 Benefits Of Having Lifelong Pursuits

An important side note to keep in mind is that these reasons are all pulled from my personal experience.
If you’re looking for a rabbit hole of scientific research to support this idea, you won’t find that here. All I’m doing is sharing my own personal experiences on the lifelong pursuits I’ve been chasing down in my life for the last decade and a half.
But with that being said, here are 3 benefits you have a lifelong pursuit.
1. Empowers You With A Stronger Connection To Your Passions
Your hobbies and interests are similar to your relationships with people. The more time you spend doing them, the stronger your attachment and emotional connection to them grow.
Think about it…
When you form a relationship with someone—whether with a romantic partner or a good friend—the stronger the emotional bond becomes, and the deeper and richer the relationship becomes in quality.
The same thing is true with your hobbies and interests.
That’s why looking at and treating your hobby, passion, or interest as a lifelong pursuit is so powerful. You become connected to it on a deeper level. And that’s an outcome worth striving for if you ask me.
2. Arms You With Skills For Other Endeavors
The set of skills you master in one area have a tendency to bleed over into other areas.
For this reason, a lifelong pursuit can be a launchpad into other careers, businesses, or creative endeavors that you can’t even fathom right now. For example, I started out as a rapper. And for over a decade, I thought that was the only path I would ever be on.
But the truth is that was only the beginning…
If you had told me 10 years ago that the skills I was developing from performing on stage as a rapper would lead me to become a self-improvement speaker, and then that would result in me becoming a writer, I wouldn’t have believed you if you swore on a stack of Bibles.
Yet here we are…
And trust me… the same is true for you. The activities that are currently enthralling your attention are preparing you for different phases in your life that you can’t even comprehend.
That’s why it’s so important to trust the process at whatever your current stage in life is.
3. Builds You Into An Interesting And Dynamic Person
People like interesting people.
Why? Because interesting people have stories, perspectives, and vast storehouses of knowledge that make them fascinating. Think of the last time you met someone with that kind of personality. I bet you found them fun and engaging to interact with, didn’t you?
Having a lifelong pursuit (or several lifelong pursuits) gives you a variety of experiences.
As a result, you become that interesting person that others find attractive and enthralling. But more than that, you start to see yourself as someone with distinction. You begin recognizing your individuality and believing in the uniqueness only YOU can bring into the world.
Talk about a confidence booster…
Wrapping Up
A lifelong pursuit of any hobby, interest, or passion will help you lead an interesting life.
But more than that, it will keep you young at heart. Take it from me… As of this writing, I’m 33 years old, and I still feel that there are plenty of youthful days ahead of me. And I owe a lot of that to the fact that every day, despite the stressors of life, I get to do the things I love most. And you should do the same.
And remember, stay Motivated And Disciplined.
