Feeling low on motivation? It happens. However, that doesn’t make it acceptable to not honor your goals and commitments. For this reason, it’s essential to develop the right mentality for when you hit those inevitable low points. And luckily, I’ve got you covered; here are 5 mindset tips for motivation when you feel yourself deviating from the path.
5 Mindset Tips For Motivation
When you get your mentality right, everything else will fall into place. However, this is a process. But the best place to start is right here and right now—nobody ever got anything done while waiting for opportunity to favor them. So, in no particular order of importance, here are 5 mindset tips for motivation.
1. Build Momentum
“Taking action breeds confidence and courage; inaction breeds fear and doubt.”
~ Dale CarnegieDale CarnegieDale CarnegieDale CarnegieDale Carnegie
Sometimes motivation is a matter of momentum. What does that mean? It means you just need to take action. You’re not always going to feel like it doing what you need to do; so you have to be able to push yourself forward despite the lack of motivation.
Now here comes the interesting part…
If you can do this, motivation will find you instead of you having to find motivation. Getting yourself over that hump is the challenging part. But if you can force yourself to act, that feeling of determination will most likely return.
And if it doesn’t?
Well, enjoy the sense of pride that comes from taking action, despite your emotions at the moment. That’s a superpower in and of itself that most people will never develop.
2. Find Accountability
One of the best mindset tips for motivation is to find an accountability partner. This concept will light the needed fire under your ass. You won’t even entertain the thought of floundering, failing, or fooling around when you have someone else to report to. Here are some important considerations to make this concept work in your life:
- Enlist The Right Person: Find an accountability partner who is reliable, responsible, and who you respect. This will go a long way in you wanting to show up as your best as you won’t want to look like a flake in their eyes.
- Make Losing Painful: Put something on the line; get some skin in the game. If there are no punishments for failure, what incentive will you have to follow through? The penalty can be anything but make it painful. For example, with my accountability partners, if I fail, I have to pay out $1000.
- Do Weekly Check-Ins:Â A weekly check-in with your accountability partner is a great way to keep you on the straight and narrow path. When it comes to mindset tips for motivation, this is by far one of the most effective.
3. Revisit Your Goals
Your chosen path can feel like a jailhouse at times. You’re “trapped” on the crossing between where you are and where you want to go. And worse, your destination is out of sight for 99% of the journey. So frequently, as much as possible, you need to refresh in your mind what you’re doing this. So be sure to…
- Review your goals
- Write them down in a journal
- Create a vision board
- Put images of them in your camera roll
This daily visiting session keeps your mind focused, your fire burning, and your desire alive. Make it a point to revisit your goals daily.
4. Help Someone Else
So often we get stuck in our own heads. This has the effect of making us believe that the world revolves around us and our problems. Stop for a moment. Take your mind off of yourself and focus your attention on someone else. What does this look like in practical terms? It’s simple…
- Ask someone how they’re doing
- Smile at someone passing your way
- Give some money to a homeless person, etc.
Seriously; try it.
Place your attention on someone else, even if it’s only for a brief moment. This hack replaces your problems with gratitude. As a result? Your fighting spirit of motivation will return as you begin to see your difficulties aren’t nearly as bad as your mind likes to make them out to be.
5. Make Success Easy
Motivation is often times like a locomotive: It can take some time to build up steam but once it gets going, it becomes a beast under its own momentum. And the best way to pickup steam is to make success easy.
What does that mean in practical terms?
- Instead of saying you’ll work on your new book for an hour, say you’ll do 5 minutes of uninterrupted work
- Rather than saying you’ll go to the gym 5 days a week, commit to 25 push ups every morning
- As a substitute of making 100 calls a day to gain leads for your business, resolve to do 50
Make success easy (at least when first starting out) because here’s the deal… Over time, these small, seemingly “inconsequential” actions will incrementally increase and intensify.
The result? A renewed sense of motivation will occur as progress toward your goals continues to move on an upward trajectory. And as you build on each kept promise, momentum will naturally take over as you do more and more.
It’s a slow and steady system, but it’s foolproof for both motivation and discipline.
