How To Stay Motivated During The Holidays (A Simple 3-Step Strategy)

The holidays: The time of year people start cutting themselves some slack and easing up on their objectives. Look, I enjoy this time of year as much as anyone else. However, that doesn’t mean I let it become an excuse to take my foot off the gas pedal toward my goals. And neither should you. It’s important to stay motivated during the holidays.

Why? Because reaching your goals requires momentum. And if you start slowing down, it’ll be that much harder to pick things back up again. For this reason, you have to maintain your discipline in order to stay motivated during the holidays.

Here are a few suggestions to help you do that.

1. Keep Up With Your Routine

The holidays are the time when people justify laziness and overindulgence. They start skipping workouts, eating more than they should, and tapering off on the disciplines that keep them on point. Look, splurge a little. But keep that key phrase in mind: “A little.”

You cannot sway from your routines. They are the catalysts that will help you reach your goals. So ensure that you don’t waver on those habits and disciplines you’ve put in so much time and effort to adopt.

If normally you workout every day, continue working out every day. If you typically eat healthy all the time, continue your practice of eating healthy. You get the point. Leaning to stay motivated during the holidays begins with keeping up with your daily disciplines.

2. Exercise Moderation

I’m not against enjoying the holidays. In fact, I’m all for it. However, anything in excess (for obvious reasons) should be controlled and moderated. So if you’re going to splurge a little, fine. But don’t over do it. Exercise moderation in alcohol and food consumption.

Too much of either can put you off from keeping up with your routine. And that can be disastrous for staying motivated during the holidays.

Here are a few ways you can exercise moderation during this time:

  • Maintain your regular diet: A good way to exercise moderation is to continue with your normal eating routine. Slacking in this area to make room for unhealthy choices is a perfect set up for over consumption.
  • Set limits: How many drinks will you have? What kind of food will you splurge on? who will you be spending the holidays with? These are great questions to ask as they will help you clarify the limits you should set for yourself.
  • Accountability: I talk about the power of accountability on my blog a lot. And if you want to stay motivated during the holidays, you’d do well to exercise this simple principle. Find someone to keep you accountable to your goals this holiday season.

3. Start Planning

The holiday typically mean everybody has more time on their hands. As a result, this is the perfect time to start planning… Planning your goals for the new year, creating ways to achieve them, and designing how you want the year to unfold. This is the perfect way to stay motivated during the holidays because creating plans generates excitement for the future.

You’ll feel more determined and focused. And that will motivate you to keep to your routine, stick to your disciplines, and moderate yourself appropriately during the holiday season.

Final Thoughts

Don’t allow the holidays to take you off course. Yes, enjoy them; spend time with friends and family, etc. However, ensure that you stay on the path toward your goals and continue with your self-improvement journey.
