It’s 10:28 AM as I write this. I’m sitting in a massive terminal at the Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport waiting for a connecting flight. My destination? Abu Dhabi, UAE. Why? To accomplish the major goal of completing my first Spartan Race. I’ve wanted to cross this goal off my bucket list for a long time now. And soon, I’ll be able to do it. I’m a goal oriented person; it’s the standard I hold myself to in life.
And this brings me to a very question for you… What’s your standard? What is it you’re willing to except or refuse in your life? Most people never think about this; however, it’s essential to get clear on what your standards are so that you don’t drift into a subpar lo-quality life.
Why Your Standards Are Crucial
“To change your life you must to two things: Raise your standards and turn your ‘shoulds’ into ‘MUSTS.'”
~ Tony Robbins
Your standards dictate what is and isn’t acceptable to you. As a result, they are the drivers that will ultimately propel you to your final destination in life. That’s why it’s essential to align your standards with your goals. So the question you need to ask yourself is: Are my standards aligned with my desires?
For example, if you want to be financially independent, but you spend more than you earn and can’t stick to a budget, this discrepancy will lead to poverty instead of prosperity. The solution? Raise your standards to the level they need to be in order for you to get what you want. High standards will help you…
- Attract better quality relationships
- Become physically and mentally healthier
- Shift from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset
- Achieve your biggest goals in life
- Develop self-confidence and discipline
- Be more effective in your personal and professional lives
- Live a life of personal satisfaction and fulfillment
The standard you set for yourself in life will either be the catalyst for your success or the reason for your failure. But with that in mind, you’re probably wondering what standards you should abide by to unleash your inner fighter. While everyone is different, there a few things we can all benefit from in our lives.
Here are 5 daily disciplines that will help raise the standard and unveil your inner warrior.
1. Engage In Physical Movement
Daily exercise should be non-negotiable for everyone serious about self-improvement. I don’t let a day go by without some form of physical activity. Whether it’s martial arts training, weight lifting, running, or a simple 5 or 10-minute workout at home, daily physical activity is a necessity for me. And it should be for you too.
Exercise is the perfect starting point to raise the personal standard in your life to a higher level.
2. Fuel Your System
You can’t outwork a bad diet. You can have your training regime dialed in perfectly but if your nutrition is missing the mark, nothing else matters. Look, I’m not saying you can never have pizza again. I enjoy cheat days as much as anyone else. However, unhealthy food doesn’t make up the bulk of what I consume.
If you’re not eating healthy foods most of the time, you’ll pay the price.
Aim for 70% to 80% of your diet being healthy. Then the other 20% to 30% of the time, you can have your donuts, snacks, sugary treats, etc. It’s all about balance and moderation.
3. Feed Your Mind
How does your mental diet look? Are you consuming too much social media, TV, negative music, etc? If so, dial it back. Your mind needs a healthy diet just as much as your body. For this reason, give it the “nutrition” it needs to function at its best and move you toward your goals. Consider the following for your mental diet:
- Read (audio or physical are great)
- Connect with quality people
4. Work On Your Craft
Everyone has something in their lives that they’re better at than most people. This is your gift. It’s what you should be nurturing every single day. If you want to raise the standard in your life, begin taking this gift seriously and treating it with respect. You do this by spending time every day developing it. There’s a bible phrase that says, “Your gift will make room for you.”
This means that, with persistent effort, you can reach success in your life through the development of your gift. For example, my gift is words. I use this gift through writing and speaking to motivate and inspire others. And so I work on these articles as well as my public speaking skills daily to develop my gift.
And then… I give it away to the world.
5. Perform Calculated Hardships
Life is hard, so you need to be too. For this reason, you should challenge yourself every day. You should do something on a daily basis that adds a little bit of friction or discomfort in your life. I call these Calculated Hardships. They are meant to toughen you up so when real difficulties occur, you’ll be ready.
Why? Because you will have desensitized yourself to the feeling of struggle. Here are some ideas of Calculated Hardships that have worked well for me over the years:
- Cold showers
- Taking the stairs
- Talking to strangers
